Anderton to Middlewich and Middlewich to Paddys Wood (Trent & Mersey Canal)

 Thursday 21st August

Got up early today, believe it or not and we untied and went to the water point to fill up, in fact we left at 8.30am!!  Filled up with water, then set off along the canal which was very quiet considering it is school holidays.  Along past Marston and through Broken Cross and Rudheath.

Kingfisher at Billinge Green Flash
We were going through Billinge Green Flash where we moored on the way down, it was very quiet only a couple of boats moored and I saw something on the towpath, my eye sight is not the best, it was moving and I thought at first it was just a leaf or something blowing, then as we were almost past it, I realised it was a Kingfisher just sat on the edge of the canal, we slowed down and I took a picture but not the best I could have got, if only I had realised what it was earlier, I could have got the picture of the week, oh well never mind, maybe next time!!

View from balcony of Big Lock pub
On we went and moored at Middlewich just before The Big Lock pub and lock.  It is a really nice pub, so we went in and had a drink and a spot of lunch.  They have a balcony which overlooks the lock, so we sat out there and a watched a few boats go through the lock.

Walked back to the boat, chilled out for a bit, then went for a walk down the canal to the middlewich junction and went into the Chandlers there to buy a new tunnel light.  Walked back to the boat, staying here tonight, then chugging of tomorrow.

Middlewich Locks
Believe it or not, we were up early again today, don’t know what is going on!!  Headed off to the Big lock, there was a boat in front of us and a couple coming down, so it was slow going through the next three, also the pounds were down so we had to let some water into the pound to bring it up a bit before we came out of the lock.

Our Guide popped up again
In Kings Lock
Leaving our last lock for today

Got to the Middlewich Junction which was very quiet, went through King’s Lock and on down the canal to the outskirts of Middlewich, through four more locks, then moored in a nice open spot called Paddys Wood in the middle of nowhere.

Chilled out for a bit, then walked along the tow path for about a mile to Wheelock, it is a small village with a couple of shops and a nice restaurant/bar right on the canal.   While we were walking to Wheelock, along the canal came Ruth on Kiehtan, she moors on the Gloucester & Sharpness canal.  She stopped for a chat, it was really nice to see her and catch up.   Stopped for a coffee,at the italian restaurant  then walked back along the canal back to the boat.  Staying here overnight, then moving on tomorrow.

  1. We had read there was an Italian restaurant on the canal at Wheelock, so planned to eat there, but when we got there it had recently changed hands and wasn't opening for a week. We had a drink outside the Commercial Hotel, didn't go in as it looked a bit grimy. The curtains looked as though they would fall off if they tried to close them! But it was worth looking inside, as it was still back in the early 20th century. Then we tried the Cheshire Cheese, but there were 3 cat dishes in the garden. Smuggler didn't see the cats, but he smelt them, and when a small dog came into the garden, he thought it was a cat and squealed (Kev knows what that's like!) so as he'd blotted his copy book we made a hasty retreat. Went to the fish and chip shop which turned out to be very good.
