Worcester (Worcester & Birmingham Canal) to Upton Upon Severn (River Severn)

We moved down into Worcester Basin on Saturday morning as we wanted a few days in Worcester.  It is a really nice city.  We had a wander around and went for a nice walk on Sunday down to Diglis lock, across the foot bridge and walked up the other side of the river to Worcester Bridge then back along the river past Diglis House Hotel back to the locks in the basin and back to the boat.  A couple of afternoons we sat in the garden of the Diglis House Hotel as it overlooks the river and it is a really nice place to sit and watch the world go by.  We have had a really nice few days in Worcester but it is now time to do the last leg of our trip.

And out onto the River Severn

Leaving Worcester behind
We are off down the river today, so checked with the lock keeper at Diglis that the river was safe to go on, he said that it was okay although it was rising abit at the locks but nothing to worry about, so that was good to hear.   We got ready and set off to the locks in the basin that take you down to the river, there are two, they are double locks and the gates are really heavy, a boat was just coming out, so Kev took the boat in and then got out and helped me shut the gate, I opened the paddles and down we went, then into the next lock and soon we were out onto the River Severn.  It was very calm.

Into Diglis River Lock
Diglis lock is not far away and as we had rung ahead to the lock keeper, he was expecting us and the lock was ready so in we went, hooked onto the wire poles and down we went and out the lock and on down the river.  There isn’t much to see on the river as the edges are mostly covered with tall trees so it is a bit boring.

We had a couple or rain showers, but nothing much and within a couple of hours we were approaching Upton-on-Severn.  The pontoon was empty, so we moored up.  The river was running quite fast but it was still very calm.

We walked up into the town, it only has a few shops but they are mainly independent traders, it is nice to walk around.  Went for a drink, then back to the boat.  We are staying here tonight, then off down to Gloucester tomorrow.

  1. What bliss to get to Upton and find all that empty space on the floating moorings!
