Turning onto the Coventry Canal |
There was a bit of drizzly rain in the air this morning as we set off
to the two locks which will take us down to the junction with the Coventry
Canal. It didn’t take us very long to
get through the two locks and then we turned onto the Coventry Canal, leaving the Trent & Mersey canal behind us.
There is a swing bridge at the entrance to this canal, so I had to open that, but it is easy

Going through Swing Bridge |
Stopped just past there at the
water point to get water, then on we went along the Coventry canal, it’s a bit
twisty but a nice canal, past Huddlesford which has a pub on the canal which
looks nice, so will stop there next time and on to Whittington where we moored. It was very quiet there with no other moored
boats and then we found out why. A main
line train line runs very close to the canal and at times its sounds and feels
like the train is coming along the tow path, but it doesn’t really bother us,
so we stayed here.

Stone marker on canal |
Walked up to the village of Whittington, quite small with a chemist and
a Co-op and a Chinese take-away. There
are three pubs in the village. Walked
through the village and back along the tow path and came across a stone marker
which marks a strange point on this canal where the Coventry Canal becomes the Birmingham
& Fazeley Canal . This came about as
the Coventry Canal Company ran out of money at Fazeley and the Birmingham &
Fazeley Canal Company continued the canal onto Whittington. The Trent & Mersey Company built a
linking arm from Fradley to Whittington which was later bought by the Coventry
Canal Company thus becoming a detached section of their canal. If you
understand all this, then you are cleverer than I am!!!
We saw a poster in the village saying there is a craft and product sale
tomorrow in the pub car park, so we are going to go up and have a look in the
morning before we chug off.
