Froghall to Consall Forge (Caldon Canal)

I haven't been able to post for a few days as where we were moored in Consall Forge, it is down in the valley and there was no signal at all!  So here are my posts for Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday 6th September

Narrow Section on Canal
Unusual Arched Bridge
Lock with marker for tunnel
Tonight Matthew I'm going to be ....
It was a bit overcast as we set off, but at least it was dry.  Chugged back up the canal, through a really narrow section, luckily we didn’t meet anyone and on into the lock.  At this lock, there is a marker hanging down so you can see if your boat will fit in Froghall tunnel.  The lock was against us, so I had to empty it first, but soon we were in and up and out and on up the canal, under a really nice bridge looks a bit like a church door.  As we were chugging up, the train came past, unfortunately it was a diesel , but still good as it goes right alongside the canal, back under the overhanging platform at Consall Station and moored up just past the bridge opposite the Black Lion pub.  It is a really nice spot, right in the countryside, only downside is that there is no phone or internet signal as we are in a valley, but you can’t have it all!

Diesel train passing us

Went for a walk up to the station, then just chilled out for the rest of the day.  We are staying here tomorrow as well, then moving off on Monday.

Sunday 7th September

Diesel train and our boat
Steam train, pub & our boat
We are staying put today as the steam train is running again today and we want to get a photo of the train coming up the track past the pub and with our boat in the picture too.  We also want to try the pub.  Took a few shots when the train came past and got a few good pictures.

Chilled out for a bit, then walked up to the pub, it is really nice, you have to walk across the train line to get to the pub and they have chickens running around, its great.  It is really nice in side as well and the staff are really friendly.  We decided to eat there this evening, so booked a table.

Our boat from the pub
Went back to the boat for a bit, then went back up to the pub for our meal.  It was really good, I had rib eye steak and was probably the best quality steak I have had for quite sometime, we  would definitely recommend eating there, also the pub is in the middle of nowhere but in the Summer it gets lots of customers, some by foot, some on the train and others by car, although we have been told the last part of the road is pretty full of potholes, but that doesn’t seem to deter people.  I think in the Winter it is a different story, but they still manage to keep going, it is really unique and if you are in the area, it is one place you should try and visit.

We are staying here again tonight, off tomorrow.
