Whittington to Hopwas Birmingham & Fazeley Canal

It was drizzling with rain this morning when we got up, but it wasn’t much so we went up into the village to see what the food and craft sale was like in the pub car park.  There were half a dozen stalls, one was Woodhouse Farm which is in Fisherwick Wood, Lichfield about a mile away, they rear their own animals and grow fruit and make it into jam, so we bought some really nice bacon and sausages and a pot of jam.  Apparently their farm is not very far from Huddlesford just up the canal, so when we go through here next year, we will stop there and go up to the farm to get some provisions.  Another of the stalls was a lady selling cakes and scones she had made this morning, so we bought a few things from her, had a look around the other stalls, then walked back to the boat.

It was still abit drizzly but we decided to move on up the canal a few miles to Hopwas.  Four or five boats went by us in our direction before we set off, funny yesterday we were lucky to see that many boats all day and today it was like the M5!!  The drizzly rain stopped, although the sun never showed its face, but at least it was now dry!

Chugged off behind this convoy and on along the canal, it is a bit twisty and narrow in places, but nice with lots of open countryside.  Past the Whittington Firing Ranges keeping a good lookout for the Whittington sniper, but fortunately we didn’t see him!!

Moored at Hopwas just before Hopwas School Bridge in a nice open spot.

Walked up the tow path and up the road trying to find the village green which we thought was at the top of the hill, but it wasn’t, so we walked back down and over the bridge and that way, found the old part of Hopwas with some old cottages, but didn’t find the village green, but it is a nice village, no shops though.

There are two pubs on the canal at Hopwas, the Tame Otter and the Red Lion.  We went into the Tame Otter for a drink, it is a Vintage Inn, really nice.

Walked back to the boat, staying here tonight, then chugging off tomorrow.
